![]() ![]() When Jesus finally announces that he wants to go to Lazarus, he tells his disciples plainly “Lazarus is dead, and for your sake, I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. His delay in coming to Lazarus is a great example. We might expect (as Lazarus’ family did), that He would come running to help. We read in verse 5 that Jesus loved this family and often stayed with them. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” (V4) Then he stayed where he was for two more days. Jesus was preaching out of town, and when he got word of Lazarus’s illness replied, “This sickness will not end in death. Lazarus came down with an unnamed, grave sickness, and when his sisters Mary and Martha realized his condition was worsening, sent word to Jesus for help. You can read the entire story of Lazarus in J ohn 11: 1-44. Lazarus’ name in Hebrew means “ God has helped.” I find no coincidences in the Bible, so the fact that his parents named him before knowing the outcome of God’s help in his life is amazing to me! ![]() Lazarus was the brother of Mary and Martha and they were among Jesus’ closest friends. As we move towards Easter and Jesus’ own resurrection, I want to study the raising of Lazarus. We know the disciples saw Jesus perform many unrecorded miracles, so there may have been many more. Pray and thank God that nothing is impossible with Him. ![]() Share how Jesus knows our names and wants to give us spiritual life. Jesus called him by name and gave him life again. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Use hand motions to help learn the verse.ĭiscuss what it means for something to be impossible, possible, or unlikely. She says how things could have been different and will be in the future, but not now. When Jesus arrives, Martha rushes out to Him. He is making the tapestry in ways we don’t understand. Explain that we may think something that happens is terrible because we can’t see it as God does. Turn over the tapestry and show that it is beautiful. Talk about how it isn’t beautiful at all. If you have a tapestry or other piece of embroidery, show the child the back of it. Sometimes, we might be upset or afraid about something that happens, but Jesus has a plan. But God’s timing is perfect and different than our own. Explain how that is difficult for us to understand because we would rush to our friends in need. Instead, Jesus spent two more days where He was, and during that time, Lazarus dies. When Jesus heard that Lazarus was ill, He didn’t run to Lazarus’ side and heal him. Share how we can talk to Jesus about the things which worry us and pray for others who are unwell. Mary and Martha loved their brother, so they did the right thing. Talk about how Lazarus became extremely sick. Example: Is sharing Jesus caring for them or not? Is fighting over toys loving or not? Talk about ways we can show friends we care. Review what we learned about Mary and Martha in the previous lesson. Ask your children what it means to be a friend? Remind them that Jesus was friends with Lazarus and his sisters Mary and Martha. ![]()
